Sifu David Neighbors began teaching independently in 1997 with Houston Northwest Hospital. He was invited to be a visiting instructor at the Women’s Arboretum while the class instructor went overseas to study qigong. This resulted in an invitation to teach at The Woodlands Recreation Center starting in 1999. Sifu Neighbors was contacted by the local community college to conduct a credit course in tai chi for a semester in 2002. With the beginning of the second location, The Tai Chi Social Hour was formed. By 2004, a third location was requested by Houston Northeast Hospital in Humble, Texas. In 2006, Tai Chi Social Hour became the Tai Chi Society of Texas and has since taught hundreds of people tai chi and trained several instructors for a low cost or free bases. It was also during this time that TCMA was formed. In 20010, the annual Tai Chi Day - The Woodlands gathering was started.
In a world of selfies, online training and weekend instructor certifications, traditional training programs are rare.
